Why it matters

Water based coating removes the solvent entirely. There is no recovery system to run, no flameproof area to maintain and no residual solvent limit to test against, which is why most new lines are specified aqueous from the outset. The trade is process time: water carries less into the pan per unit of spray, so a build-up that takes forty minutes on a solvent system takes longer on water.

Within this category the choice is usually between the two film coats and the enteric grade. AQ-Z Wb is the general purpose white or coloured film. AQ-ZWt10 is the extra white grade for dark or mottled cores, where opacity has to arrive at a low build-up. UZ1 is the universal grade for a unit that wants one code across an aqueous line and a solvent line. ECM-RP348 is the aqueous enteric grade on a methacrylic base, and SC-401 and SC-501 are the seal coats that go under any of them when the core needs protecting from the coating dispersion itself.

Running it

Run these warmer and slower than a solvent equivalent. Bed temperature in the mid to high thirties and an inlet in the seventies is the usual starting point, and the published parameters on each grade page give the range it was developed on.

  • Aqueous film coat, white or colour

    Water base ready-mix film coat supplied white or in your agreed shade.

    General purpose aqueous film coating for immediate release tablets. It is dispersed in purified water and applied as a white or coloured film coat, giving a smooth, glossy surface with well defined logo definition.

  • Aqueous film coat, extra white

    Water base extra white film coat for cores that show through a standard white.

    Aqueous extra white film coat developed for tablets where the core colour bleeds through a conventional white film. Calcium and Azithromycin cores are the usual cases. It gives higher opacity at the same build-up.

  • Universal film coat

    One grade that runs on either an aqueous or a solvent process.

    Universal film coat material for units that run mixed processes and want to hold a single grade in stores. It can be dispersed in water or in solvent, so the same code covers both product lines.

  • Enteric coat, methacrylic base, aqueous

    Water base methacrylic enteric film for Diclofenac and Serratiopeptidase.

    Methacrylic base enteric coating for an aqueous process, formulated for Diclofenac and Serratiopeptidase enteric tablets. It takes solvent handling out of the enteric stage wherever the core allows a water base process.

  • Transparent seal coat and pre-coat

    Clear sub-coat laid down before an enteric layer on acid labile cores.

    Transparent layer seal coat or pre-coat applied ahead of an enteric coat, specified for the Pantoprazole group. It isolates the core from the enteric polymer and gives the functional layer a uniform surface to build on.

  • Colour or white seal coat

    Pigmented sub-coat where the seal layer also has to cover the core.

    Colour or white seal coat for cores that need covering as well as sealing, so the finishing film coat can be applied at a lower build-up.
