Coating material for ayurvedic and herbal manufacture
For Schedule T units coating classical and proprietary herbal tablets.
Written by the Rglax Pharma technical team, who formulate and manufacture every grade named on this category at our WHO-GMP works in Tahliwal, Una (drug manufacturing licence NNZ/23/238). Reviewed 3 September 2026. Licences and certificates.

Why it matters
Sugar coating still matters here in a way it does not anywhere else, because a classical ayurvedic tablet is often expected to look sugar coated. Herbal cores are also the hardest thing we coat. Batch to batch the colour moves with the raw material, the moisture content is higher than a synthetic core and the smell has to be held in. A film here is doing three jobs at once, covering a colour that was not the same last month, keeping moisture out of a core that already carries some, and masking a taste that most patients would otherwise notice.
The working combination here is a seal coat under an extra white film. SC-501, pigmented, goes on first and does most of the covering. AQ-ZWt10 or NaQ-Z1Wt10 finishes it at a lower build-up than a white film alone would need. SFC101 gives the sugar coated appearance a classical preparation is expected to have, and HR100 goes into the blend when a hygroscopic extract will not compress dry.
Running it
Send cores from two different batches, not one. Matching a shade against a single batch of a herbal tablet produces a film that looks wrong the moment the raw material shifts.
Grades in this category
Every grade is listed with what it is for, the process base it runs on and the actives it was formulated against, so the choice between two of them can be made here rather than on a sample.
Aqueous film coat, white or colour
Water base ready-mix film coat supplied white or in your agreed shade.
General purpose aqueous film coating for immediate release tablets. It is dispersed in purified water and applied as a white or coloured film coat, giving a smooth, glossy surface with well defined logo definition.

- White or colour, high gloss
Aqueous film coat, extra white
Water base extra white film coat for cores that show through a standard white.
Aqueous extra white film coat developed for tablets where the core colour bleeds through a conventional white film. Calcium and Azithromycin cores are the usual cases. It gives higher opacity at the same build-up.

- Extra white, high opacity

Non-aqueous film coat, white or colour
Solvent base ready-mix film coat for moisture sensitive cores.
Solvent base film coating for cores that cannot tolerate an aqueous process. It is supplied white or in your agreed shade, with the same finish characteristics as the aqueous grade at a lower bed temperature.
- Base ·
- Non-aqueous (solvent)
- Finish ·
- White or colour, high gloss
Non-aqueous film coat, extra white
Solvent base extra white film coat for high opacity cover on sensitive cores.
Non-aqueous extra white film coat for moisture sensitive tablets that also need high opacity. It combines a solvent process with the covering power of the Wt10 series.

- Non-aqueous (solvent)
- Finish ·
- Extra white, high opacity
Universal film coat
One grade that runs on either an aqueous or a solvent process.
Universal film coat material for units that run mixed processes and want to hold a single grade in stores. It can be dispersed in water or in solvent, so the same code covers both product lines.
- Base ·
- Aqueous or non-aqueous
- Finish ·
- White or colour
Sugar film coat material
Non-aqueous sucrose based system for a sugar coated finish without a full sugar line.
Non-aqueous sugar film coat that covers the tablet with a sucrose based solution and provides protection from light and moisture. It is fully formulated on HPMC, so a conventional or auto coater delivers the sugar coated appearance without the traditional multi stage sugar coating process.

Transparent seal coat and pre-coat
Clear sub-coat laid down before an enteric layer on acid labile cores.
Transparent layer seal coat or pre-coat applied ahead of an enteric coat, specified for the Pantoprazole group. It isolates the core from the enteric polymer and gives the functional layer a uniform surface to build on.
- Base ·
- Aqueous or non-aqueous
- Finish ·
- Transparent
- Formulated against ·
- Pantoprazole group
Colour or white seal coat
Pigmented sub-coat where the seal layer also has to cover the core.
Colour or white seal coat for cores that need covering as well as sealing, so the finishing film coat can be applied at a lower build-up.
- Base ·
- Aqueous or non-aqueous
- Finish ·
- White or colour
Taste mask for Azithromycin and Ofloxacin
Ready-mix taste mask for bitter actives in oral suspension.
Ready-mix taste mask formulated for Azithromycin and Ofloxacin suspensions. It masks the taste and odour of the active through a solid dispersion approach rather than flavour loading on its own.
- Base ·
- Dry blend
- Finish ·
- Taste masked granule or powder
- Formulated against ·
- Azithromycin suspension, Ofloxacin suspension
Hygroscopic adsorbent material
Holds moisture off hygroscopic actives during compression and afterwards.
HR100 is a hygroscopic adsorbent material for hygroscopic drugs. It works effectively on Sodium Valproate, L-Carnitine, Valproate Sodium and other actives that pick up moisture and create problems during compression and afterwards.
